Learner Development

Summary of Learner Development Standard:

Teachers should be able to understand how students develop and see patterns of learning within individual students. As a teacher, I will recognize the social, emotional, and cognitive patterns of each student. After observing these patterns, I  will develop focused lessons and intriguing learning experiences for students.

Accommodation for the scared student:

I noticed a student in my classroom was not working on the project. The student had spent an entire class period being scared to draw anything because he felt anxious about what others might say. In the next class period, I was able to provide him with pre-cut shapes and traced the first one for him. I suggested he paint the background first, and after 10 minutes he stopped and I let him take a break. After another 5-10 minutes, I went back to him, sat down, and encouraged him to paint. After I believed he felt comfortable with what he was doing I left him to work independently and he finished. By noticing the emotional pattern of the student I was able to assist them in completing a project.

One-point Perspective Graphic Organizer:

I used Graphic Organizers to help students develop an understanding of lessons and as a tool for me to develop focused plans. Graphic organizers gave students a visual aid that they needed to complete their understanding of what was being taught. I would use the graphic organizer as group work and as independent practice. Being able to utilize them in so many ways to reach different students allows students and I  to communicate patterns of learning.

Elements of Art Final Project:

Assessments come in many forms and project-based summative assessments are one way to gather students’ knowledge. I had students create a final project that included all seven elements of art. It shows their summative understanding of the elements of art and gives me, the teacher, the ability to understand the cognitive patterns of the student.
